Time management

Stel je in op een aantal momentjes in de week een kwartiertje oefenen op de gitaar. Als we iets verder zijn zul je merken dat je meer oefening nodig hebt. Een aantal momenten in de week een half uurtje.

After finishing the (live) support lesson (if possible), I strongly recommand you to start practising at home right away. Then instructions are still fresh in the mind. When you start playing the exercises the next day, you will notice that it's more difficult to retrieve all the information given in the lesson.

The same principle consists for the lessons online. When doing exercises it's important to do some rehearsals the next day. Doing some exercises, then not playing the guitar for some weeks, then practise again, will not give you the progress you need and prefere.

Enjoy playing guitar

You want to play the Saxophone? Then you have to spend considerable money! The guitar is actually rather cheap. It therefore is quite populair. And of course it's easy to transport this instrument. Nevertheless, the guitar is easily abandoned, eventually catching dust in some of the storage rooms at home.

It takes time to eventually play this instrument at a decent level. It's not easy at all! 1 on 3 of my students is not able to finish the first year.

When you are still able to make progress you will also feel motivated. Not making progress... then you will almost certainly feel a bit puzzled. Eventually you perceive it becomes a stressfull activity to do exercises. It's not going the way you prefere. Then things become complicated and not motivating. Then students eventually do quit.

There is a certain balance between effort and reward. Too much effort? You feel you are unable to further continue with the courses.

The (live) support lessons also provide you with the obligation of doing your homework! When doing online lessons without the help of a teacher you have to be very disciplined yourself to obtain enough practice to eventually play the guitar succesfully. Therefore I recommand a combination of online and live support lessons.

Goal management

Sometimes pre-students do ask the following question: How long does it take to play this song? A legitimate question I think. As mentioned previously, effort and reward have to be balanced. The amount of effort you think you have to spend on learning and practice to play the guitar at a certain level also has to match with the actual effort needed to succeed.

Therefore it's important to obtain a correct idea of how much effort is needed each week. We start with the basic principles of classical guitar. You will need about 6 months to complete this first set of lessons (part 1 & 2). Then it takes another 6 months to learn grabbing the chords and slapping the guitar in a decent way. So after about one year we are able to start with playing the first popsongs like 'don't panic by coldplay', 'the house of the rising sun by the animals' or 'a horse with no name by America'.

The final point I would like to illustrate is the importance of encouraging yourself with some kind of engagement before starting. How much energy are you willing to spend each week? For example, it takes 2 times a week about 20 minutes practice each time to complete first chapters of this cours the upcoming year (classical guitar part 1, 2 and barbarian pop). Then please commit yourself to a certain agreement. For example: I will make sure I do have the oppertunity to practice at least 3 times each week during the next year to complete this course succesfully!
